During the meeting we discussed the VE day celebrations that the Cree Valley Community Council want to put on for the 75th celebrations of piece in Europe. The VE days plans are what I'd really gone along for, because like the Community Council, I thought it was an important landmark in time that we should be making a big deal out of. I'm happy to say they have already thought of lots of things for a lovely street part for the community. I'll be looking forward to it!
On the agenda were other events that they hope to put on during the year, for fundraising and for the Hogmanay Hoolie. The first year we came to live in Newton Stewart was November 2018 and on New Years Eve we were surprised and thrilled when we learnt that there was a street party in Dashwood Square with a live band. It was brilliant and so many people attended. In 2019 it was really disappointing that there wasn't another street party. Apparently, there just weren't the funds to do it because it was quite costly.
The good news is that they are hoping to have the Hogmanay Hoolie again this year (2020), but they are already seeing a £2,000 shortfall in funding. But at least knowing about the shortfall this early on, means that we can do something about it. I'd like to do a bit of 'Save Our Hogmanay Hoolie' fundraising, but I'm not sure what that looks like yet. I'm having a meeting with Shirley Shaw at the Co-op next week, so I'll see what she thinks.
Lots to look forward to this year in Newton Stewart!
